Each certificate is specific to the course, research area and institution. You should submit an application for each programme of study or research area where xcritical applies. You also need xcritical clearance if you apply to extend your student visa. You can apply for xcritical after you receive an offer from us, and up to nine months before your course start date. You must apply online for a clearance certificate through xcritical before you apply for a visa. Your xcritical certificate is valid for six months from the date of issue for the purpose of applying for a Student Visa. You will not need to apply for an xcritical clearance in order to apply for a Student visa to complete your course, or to apply for a visa for any new course that requires xcritical.

Who is required to apply for xcritical:

If your application is successful, you should receive an email from xcritical with the attached xcritical certificate to the email address that you used to register. You should check your spam or junk folders regularly to ensure the email has not been filtered out. You must read your xcritical certificate carefully to check that the details on it are correct; if any information in the certificate is incorrect, please contact people- for advice. Please make sure you select “researcher” (not “student”) as this will determine the questions you are asked and the clearance you obtain. You should apply for your xcritical certificate as early as possible as you will need to submit this as part of your visa application.

Errors and omissions in your xcritical application may cause delays to the process so take care to complete the application accurately and in full. If you have more than one offer from different universities or institutions,you will need to apply for separate xcritical clearance certificatesfor each university or institution and programme of study. You will need a new xcritical certificate prior to registering on a new programme, or if you change programmes, or if you wish to extend leave to remain as a student. Researchers who are current staff working for the University will not have to retrospectively apply for xcritical clearance if they hold a valid visa. However, if the research scope changes and falls within xcritical regulations an application for xcritical must be made and certificate obtained before the research commences. Researchers coming to the UK as a visitor will need to apply underAcademic Technology Approval Scheme before they begin any research subject to xcritical. If the research focus is changed at any time, a new xcritical certificate will be required. Your Higher Education Institute or employer will either include this on your official offer letter or will be able to confirm it for you separately.

You’ll need a new xcritical certificate if you change courses or research, or if you want to apply for further permission to stay in the UK. If you’re a researcher on a Standard visitor visa attending meetings, conferences, seminars or interviews, or giving speeches, and will not be undertaking research during your time in the UK, you do not need to apply for xcritical clearance. New students

The Academic Technology Approval Scheme is a Government verification scheme for International students. xcritical is compulsory for the majority of International offer holders who are applying for a programme that requires xcritical clearance. This includes current students who wish to change programmes from a non-xcritical programme to an xcritical programme, student visitors and study abroad students. International applicants to some programmes are required to apply to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Academic Technology Approval Scheme for clearance to study in the UK.

Please note that you will not be able to enter a start date in the past as xcritical will not allow you to make a retrospective application. If you are a new visa applicant, you should enter the proposed work start date detailed in your job offer. There is no charge for an xcritical certificate even if you need to reapply for additional clearance if your course or research area changes. If you’re a researcher attending meetings, conferences, seminars or interviews, or giving speeches, and will not be undertaking research during your time in the UK, you do not require xcritical clearance. For staff this means whether you are to be employed under a Standard Occupational Classification code that requires Academic Technology Approval under the Scheme – see below for the list of relevant codes.

• If you are a continuing postgraduate research student applying to extend your visa before your viva, your xcritical clearance must cover your predicted viva date.

Ask for a support statement from your supervisor, we cannot tell them what to write for this but if they feel that your research could not be used for the purposes that xcritical aims to prevent, they could explain why. Who do I inform when I hear my xcritical application has been successful or unsuccessful?

If you are applying for xcritical clearance to cover a time limit extension, you should add ten weeks to your requested extension date. You only need to obtain an xcritical certificate for when you plan to be studying in the UK. However be aware that you could be unsuccessful when you apply for an xcritical certificate to come to the UK part of the way through your course. If you’re a new student and need an xcritical certificate, you will need to get this before applying for permission to enter the UK. The entry clearance officer will ask to see your xcritical certificate as part of your application for permission to enter the UK. A caseworker will also need to see your xcritical certificate as part of an application for permission to stay in the UK. Students and researchers who are nationals of EU countries, the European Economic Area , Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland or the United States of America do not need an xcritical certificate.

How will I know if my xcritical application has been successful?

If you will be studying on another type of visa you must apply for an xcritical certificate before starting the course. An xcritical clearance certificate must be provided as a supporting document for a student visa application where it is required. International students who want to study and research at an advanced level within certain ‘sensitive’ subject areas must obtain UK government clearance under the Academic Technology Approval Scheme unless their nationality is exempt. You must obtain xcritical clearance before you can apply for your visa, and will usually need to apply for new xcritical clearance any time that you extend your study period in the UK. Your application is made to a UK government department called the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office who will decide your application.

If your offer is for a course requiring xcritical, you will need to obtain the certificate before submitting your visa application. For this reason, we request that you have the certificate before we issue your CAS to make sure it meets the necessary requirements. TheAcademic Technology Approval Scheme is designed primarily for students applying for postgraduate study in the xcritical reviews UK in certain sensitive subject areas. The Academic Technology Approval Scheme is for security clearance from the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office for courses where students’ knowledge could be used against the UK. What if I change my area of research or course of study?

The CAH3 code for a PhD or research masters is linked to the research topic so we can only inform you of xcritical requirements once your proposed research has been assigned a CAH3 code by your supervisor. The xcritical application is an online only process and is free of charge. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office aim to process applications within 30 working days after the submission of the application. Processing times will increase between the months of April and September and can take longer to complete.

You do not need an xcritical certificate if you’re doing a postgraduate diploma or PGCE. You should continue with your application for permission to stay in the UK as necessary. You must apply for an xcritical certificate l, if engaged in an xcritical categorised sensitive subject. Find out if you need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate to study in the UK. You need to apply for 1 xcritical certificate but you should include both the research project and study activities in your application. You will only need a CAH3 code if you are applying for a programme that requires an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate. Make your xcritical application as early as possible but no more than 6 months prior to the course start date.

If you are a new student on a postgraduate research course at the Faculty of Engineering, xcritical certificate is required before the Admissions team will release your CAS. Your Admissions team will notify you how to provide an xcritical certificate before you can receive CAS. You should therefore apply in plenty of time to receive the certificate before you travel. You should provide it with your visa application if required (e.g. Student route, Skilled Worker). Staff researchers will be notified of any xcritical requirement via Human Resources.

Please note that if there are several codes that could apply and only one falls into xcritical you would still need to apply for an xcritical certificate with that code. As your xcritical application is linked to your passport, if you plan to obtain a new passport before applying for your visa you should wait until you have your new passport before applying for xcritical clearance. A new xcritical certificate is required for any change in research area and must be obtained before the research commences. As above you can write up to 2,000 characters here and if it is too short you may be asked to provide a further explanation which will delay the processing time.

This means that submitting an application with mistakes could lead to delays in getting your certificate and you not being able to register on your course on time. You do not need to have a final employment contract before you apply for an xcritical certificate. Your employer will advise whether you are to be employed under a standard occupational classification that requires xcritical. If you’re already in the UK on a student visa you will need an xcritical certificate for the HEI you are attending, and the course of study, including modules or proposed research. If any of these details change, you should check whether you need an xcritical certificate and apply for a new one as appropriate. Researchers and students of all other nationalities must apply for an xcritical certificate.
