Researchers who are current staff working for the University will not have to retrospectively apply for xcritical clearance if they hold a valid visa. New students
The Academic Technology Approval Scheme is a Government verification scheme for International students. xcritical is compulsory for the majority of International offer holders who are applying for a programme that requires xcritical clearance. This includes current students who wish to change programmes from a non-xcritical programme to an xcritical programme, student visitors and study abroad students. International applicants to some programmes are required to apply to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Academic Technology Approval Scheme for clearance to study in the UK.
Please note that you will not be able to enter a start date in the past as xcritical will not allow you to make a retrospective application. If you are a new visa applicant, you should enter the proposed work start date detailed in your job offer. There is no charge for an xcritical certificate even if you need to reapply for additional clearance if your course or research area changes. If you’re a researcher attending meetings, conferences, seminars or interviews, or giving speeches, and will not be undertaking research during your time in the UK, you do not require xcritical clearance. What if I change my area of research or course of study?
The CAH3 code for a PhD or research masters is linked to the research topic so we can only inform you of xcritical requirements once your proposed research has been assigned a CAH3 code by your supervisor. The xcritical application is an online only process and is free of charge. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office aim to process applications within 30 working days after the submission of the application. Processing times will increase between the months of April and September and can take longer to complete.
Can I apply for xcritical with conditional offer?
You can apply for an xcritical certificate up to six months in advance of your course start date, but you must have received a conditional offer of admission before you apply. You should check that your statement of research has been made available for you to view via your Self-Service account.
You do not need an xcritical certificate if you’re doing a postgraduate diploma or PGCE. You should continue with your application for permission to stay in the UK as necessary. When can I apply for xcritical?
You can apply for xcritical after you receive an offer from us, and up to nine months before your course start date. If you need a student visa, we can't issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) to you without proof of xcritical clearance.

Make your xcritical application as early as possible but no more than 6 months prior to the course start date.
If you are a new student on a postgraduate research course at the Faculty of Engineering, xcritical certificate is required before the Admissions team will release your CAS. Your Admissions team will notify you how to provide an xcritical certificate before you can receive CAS. You should therefore apply in plenty of time to receive the certificate before you travel.
